About portraits and light.

March 4th, 2014 — 9:05am

Photographers are often obsessed with an extreme control of the light on portraits. I’m obsessed with an extreme control of the attitude on my models. Controlled light makes photos. Controlled attitude makes portraits.

Punctum editors portrait

March 3rd, 2014 — 1:54pm

I had the pleasure of taking some portraits of the editors of the catalan book editorial Punctum, specialized in linguistics and literature.

They are Òscar Bagur and Marta Villalonga. They run also Quadratí, the graphic design studio that designed my new website.

They and their work are a perfect balance of elegance, sobriety, precission and attitude (I would say rock’n'roll, but they would disagree).

Old Pitbull

February 25th, 2014 — 10:51pm

I must admit that Danka is a special dog for me. I met her for first time when she was just a young lady, more than twelve years ago. She was the pit bull of my friend Raül.

After some time without seing them, he answered the ad that I posted on facebook looking for pets to portray. I expected the same little demon that she was years ago, full of energy and attitude in a small but very strong body.

What I met was an old lady. You can still met that strong dog there, but some teeth are missing, the face is white and she is totally deaf now.

I’m very happy to portray her. I tried to show with my portraits both dogs: the one from my memories and the one who crossed the door of my studio.

***

New website

February 17th, 2014 — 4:25pm

As easy as it sounds. I have a new website and I love it. Hope you love it too.

JOAN CANTÓ. PORTRAITIST.

Made by the great graphic design studio Quadratí from Catalonia.

I wanted to enhance my work as portraitist. After some years working on photography I realized that I’m basically that, a commercial portraitist of beautiful and ugly people. So don’t call me photographer again. Portraitist sounds better for me.

PORTRAITIST.

Així doncs, no torneu a anomenar-me fotògraf. Retratista i prou.

Animals!

February 14th, 2014 — 12:37pm

I have been portraying some pets during the last weeks. I plan to take more animal portraits so I hope you like them, because are more coming soon!

I’m a portraitist so my plan was not to take nice pictures of nice dogs and beautiful cats, but taking some interesting portraits of them. The photosessions were long and some of them were easy to portray than others. Like with people, it all depended on how much they wanted to share with me.

Just a preview. Will make future posts for any of them and explain a bit how was the process.

Will it arrives, you can take a look at my gallery of animal portraits on my website.

******

Durant les últimes setmanes he estat retratant animals.

New editorial works coming

February 13th, 2014 — 12:17pm

First of all, sorry for the big hiatus on the blog. Being father for first time is so absorbing. But I think I finally learnt how to do it while being a photographer at the same time, so please, expect more regular updates on the blog.

I started a new adventure as photographer, and from now I’ll publish regulary portraits on Lectura, a catalan sunday magazine. They will be the portraits that illustrate an interview.

Hope you enjoy them. I plan to have tones of fun making them.

I’ll keep you updated when the first nes will be published. For the moment, a pair of previews of the two sessions I made:

Bobby Cabral, a great portuguese chef stablished in Catalonia:

And the marist brother Ramiro, a retired wood worker with a nice business story. Probably a lot of the catalan readers of this studied using one of his chairs and tables.

Will show the portraits as soon as they will be published.

My son Jaume

March 13th, 2013 — 9:17am

Important photo session. I took the the first portrait of my son Jaume.

I should also admit that it’s the first time that I have been nervous during a photo session…

He is 3 months old here. His mom was holding him and my assistant Carles was making him smile. What a great team!

This image will be sold on Istockphoto and Getty Images so Jaume will pay himself his university degree…
